Earthquake and A Hindu Scriptural Story

đź“–Valmiki Ramayana 1.40.15
On certain occasions, oh, Rama of Kakutstha, when that great-elephant moves its head desiring respite in tiresomeness then earthquakes will occur on earth.

The claim in the Valmiki Ramayana that earthquakes occur when a “hidden Great-Elephant” shakes its head is completely false. Modern science shows that earthquakes are caused by tectonic plate movements, volcanic activity, or human-induced factors, not by any elephant or supernatural being.

Why this is false:

  1. No evidence exists of a hidden elephant under the Earth.
  2. Earthquakes follow tectonic fault lines, not random movements of a mythical creature.
  3. Geology fully explains earthquakes without involving supernatural causes.

This verse is therefore a myth and not factual.
